Berlin Tegel Airport, June 2026 -
A research and design-build project by the Berlin University of Applied Sciences and Technology (BHT) exploring how historical principles of passive cooling can be adapted to today’s urban conditions. The research structure is being realised by BHT students using timber and earth blocks produced by earthbound.
The location at the Urban Tech Republic at the former Tegel Airport makes the Climate Tower a research and demonstration project for natural cooling principles and circular building materials. The earth blocks by earthbound, made from locally excavated construction soil, can absorb and release moisture. As this moisture evaporates from their surface, heat is drawn from the surrounding air – creating a natural cooling effect that, together with air circulation, contributes to the Climate Tower’s low-tech cooling concept.
