Barrel Vault

Load-bearing vault built with earth blocks

Museum Angewandte Kunst Frankfurt, July 2026

What materials should we build with to significantly reduce the climate impact of the construction sector?

One possible answer to this question is presented by a structure created as part of the World Design Capital Frankfurt RheinMain 2026 programme at the Museum Angewandte Kunst Frankfurt.

The structure is built from our load-bearing earth blocks. This time, they are used not only in the masonry, but also in a barrel vault infilled with earth blocks.

Reuse as a Construction Principle

For the base, concrete elements recovered from the demolition of a former bridge abutment on the grounds of Urban Tech Republic were transformed into a new form. The timber elements used in the structure were also brought to the site as reused components.

At the same time, the structure highlights the particular aesthetic qualities of these materials.

We would like to sincerely thank Tobias Trübenbacher, Tillmann Gebauer and Andreas Lang for the excellent collaboration during the planning, and Mattis Kindorf and Ludwig Acker for the execution.
